I am with the student interest group CALPIRG at UC Berkeley, and I would like to personally thank the Alameda City Council for adopting the county-wide plastic bag ban. At CALPIRG, we have been working very hard these past few years to ban the plastic bag in the state of California. We have banned the bag in over 16 counties and cities and now we are planning to take it statewide. Not only are we trying to do this for the good of the ocean, where there is an island of plastic roughly the size of the state of Texas that poisons the ocean with particulates for many more miles around, but we are also doing this to help the state of California. The amount of money the state spends on beach cleanups and recycling issues with single use plastic bags is in the millions, which is a number that could be cut down if plastic bags were not used statewide. So again, I would like to truly thank the Alameda city council for agreeing to ban the bag.
