State Recognizes AUSD Green-ness

The Alameda Unified School District recently received statewide recognition during the California Resource Recovery Association's (CRRA) 34th Annual Conference. The association honored the district with its Next Generation Recycler award for the Green Schools Challenge program, which took place at the Sacramento Convention Center.

The Alameda Green Schools Challenge is a multi-faceted initiative that includes a comprehensive "Four-Rs" curriculum and recycling infrastructure at all AUSD school sites. The curriculum aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through waste prevention, recycling and composting, energy efficiency and community education; and promoting cultural change among students, parents, teachers, maintenance staff and administrators.

Waste diversion rates have increased district-wide from 41 to 56 percent in one year. These results will help the district acheive its goal of 75 percent diversion within three years.
