Behind the leadership of varsity captains Sarah Courtland and Michele Loo, the Lady Hornets completed another undefeated season and played in the North Coast Section League Tournament.
Courtland dominated the opposition. She is a four-year varsity player and the team's No. 1 singles player. She has been the team's most valuable player for the past two years.
Courtland received All-League First Team honors for three years from the ACCAL Coaches Board. She is a USTA Tournament player and won the award for the highest ranking singles player in her age group for 2008 and 2009 in the Alameda County Section.
Loo played Varsity for four years in the No. 1 doubles position. She balanced tennis leadership and match play along with academics and will graduate in the top 2 percent of the class.
Loo is also the newspaper editor at the Oak Leaf, which is high school's newspaper. She also interned at the Alameda Sun.
In addition to their skills on the court, Courtland and Loo developed an off-season tennis program for 40 interested high school players to fill a gap when last season's coach abruptly resigned over the summer.
The focused on connecting the community to the Hornets' tennis program and increasing the outreach and visibility.
Their teamwork contributed to putting the school's tennis program back on track, and Alamedans can look forward to more league championships in the future.
