The 2009 Fearless Fork awards were announced this month at a gala soiree held at the palatial Gold Coast headquarters of the mysterious Alameda Hostesses, the Island City's most clandestine culinary and political action group. The theme of the extravagant, bibulous party was "Disco Gluttons" and members of the Fork Awards Tribunal (FAT) waddled, jiggled and slothed the night away to tunes like "Shake Your Bootie," "She's A Bad Mama-Jama" and "Disco Duck."

The Hostesses plied FAT with some of their legendary culinary masterpieces, like Crab Monza, Hasty Hots and the wonderful Chicken Lore (chicken stewed with cream of mushroom soup, olives, wine and Velveeta). The Hostesses also used the event to publicize their current civic project, Alameda 2020, with its goals of a Southern crossing to Highway 101 at the foot of Grand Street; casinos, wineries, resort hotels and a stadium at Alameda Point; and the renaming of Park Street to "Ole's Waffle Way," and Lincoln Avenue to "Acapulco Avenue."

FAT responded to the Hostesses' ideas with resounding belches of approval, then announced this year's Fearless Fork Awards, which set a record of 200 Forks awarded, including 25 Nirvana Fork Awards, which indicate offerings that are truly outstanding. Here then, in no particular order, are the 2009 Fearless Fork Awards.
