At 12:44 a.m. a crew from Fire Station No. 2 responded to the report of a ruptured water heater on the 900 block of Shore Line Drive. Crewmembers arrived to learn that the water heater had broken and supply valve was leaking.

Monday, Oct. 12

Ruptured heater

At 12:44 a.m. a crew from Fire Station No. 2 responded to the report of a ruptured water heater on the 900 block of Shore Line Drive. Crewmembers arrived to learn that the water heater had broken and supply valve was leaking. They turned off the water and gas and stood by as the homeowner called a plumber. They cleared the call at 1:09 a.m.

APD assist

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 2 was dispatched to assist Alameda Police Department in removing a dead body from the second floor of an abandoned building near the intersection of West Tower Road and Orion Street. Crewmembers arrived at 6:41 p.m., helped remove the body and cleared the call at 6:48 p.m.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 12 calls for service on Monday, Oct. 12.

Tuesday, Oct. 13

Arcing wires

A crew from Fire Station No. 2 was dispatched to investigate the report of electric wires arcing at the intersection of Chapin Street and Buena Vista Avenue. Crewmembers arrived on scene at 6:04 a.m. and secured the area until public works and an AMP crew arrived. They cleared the call at 6:16 a.m.

Already ashore

At 7:54 a.m. a crew from Fire Station No. 2 responded to the report of a boat taking on water at the Encinal Boat Ramp. When crewmembers arrived they found a 20 foot sailboat had run aground on the west side of the boat ramp. APD was also on scene and advised the AFD crew that the boat's occupant had already swum ashore with his dog. The call was cleared at 8:03 a.m.

Timber!

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 2 was dispatched to assist in removing a tree that had fallen on the road at Central Avenue and Ballena Boulevard. Crewmembers arrived at 2:15 p.m. and helped AFD with traffic control until a public works crew removed the tree. They cleared the call at 2:33 p.m.

Wire down

At 2:18 p.m. a crew from Fire Station No. 3 responded to the report of wires dangling in a yard at a home on the 1100 block of Grand Street. Crewmembers arrived and found a Comcast line dangling into other wires. Crewmembers untangled the lines, cut the Comcast line and advised the homeowner to call Comcast to restore service. They cleared the call at 2:24 p.m.

Drip, drip

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 2 was dispatched to investigate the report of an alarm sounding at a warehouse on the 300 block of A Avenue. They arrived on scene at 3:15 p.m. to learn there was no emergency; water leaking from the roof had caused a short circuit and activated the alarm. The owner said he would call the alarm company for repairs. Crewmembers cleared the call at 3:22 p.m.

Locked out

At 4:27 p.m. an AFD crew from Fire Station No. 2 was dispatched to the intersection of West Ranger Avenue and Saratoga Street to assist a city employee locked outside a vehicle with the motor running. The crew gained access to the vehicle and cleared the call at 4:39 p.m.

House fire

Eighteen firefighters were dispatched to a house fire on the 1300 block of Versailles Avenue. When they arrived on scene at 8:09 p.m. firefighters saw light smoke coming from the rear of the building. When they investigated, firefighters learned that the fire had been extinguished. The fire began in the kitchen and had spread from food cooking in oil on the stove to the cabinets. The homeowner told the firefighters that she heard a popping sound and saw a glow from flames and smoke coming from the kitchen. She threw water onto flames, extinguishing the fire. Estimated property loss was $5,000; estimated content loss was $5,000. Firefighters made sure that the power to the stove was turned off and cleared the call at 8:39 p.m.

False calls

Firefighters from Fire Station No. 1 responded to four false alarms on the 2600 block of Blanding Avenue: at 1:33 p.m., at 4:04 p.m., at 10:51 p.m. and at 10:58 p.m. AFD firefighters also responded to false alarms at 10:22 a.m. on the 900 block of Park Street; at 12:01 p.m. at the Carnegie Library building on the 2200 block of Santa Clara Avenue; and at 2:36 p.m. on the 800 block of Island Drive.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 18 calls for service on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Wednesday, Oct.14

Replace the battery

At 3:46 a.m. a crew from Fire Station No. 3 responded to the report of a carbon-monoxide alarm sounding at a home on the 2000 block of Central Avenue. Crewmembers arrived to learn there was no emergency; the alarm was chirping because the battery was low. They cleared the call at 4:01 a.m.

Blown fuse

At 9:45 a.m. firefighters from fire stations No. 1 and No. 3 were dispatched to investigate the report of smoke inside a building on the 900 block of Central Avenue. When crewmembers arrived they discovered that a blown electrical fuse was causing the smoke. They called AMP to the scene, helped vent smoke from the building and cleared the call at 10:23 a.m.

Pull the plug

Firefighters from Fire Station No. 1 responded to the report of a fire at a home on the 2900 block of Windsor Drive. When they arrived at 12:51 p.m., crewmembers learned there was no emergency; a clothes dryer had malfunctioned. They turned off the dryer and cleared the call at 12:58 p.m.

Low tide

At 2:44 p.m. a crew from Fire Station No. 1 was dispatched to investigate the report of the odor of natural gas near the intersection of Bayview Drive and Broadway. When crewmembers arrived they determined there was no emergency; the odor was from the Bay during a recent low tide. Crewmembers cleared the call at 2:50 p.m.

False alarms

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 1 responded to a false alarm at 3:01 p.m. at Edison Elementary School.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 12 calls for service on Wednesday, Oct. 14.

Thursday, Oct. 15

No gas

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 3 was dispatched to investigate the report of the odor of fuel on the 1700 block of Shore Line Drive. Crewmembers arrived at 12:31 a.m., investigated with a monitor but were unable to detect the source of the odor. The monitor did not indicate the presence of any unsafe gases. Crewmembers advised the reporting party that the smell may be coming from the Bay and cleared the call at 12:41 a.m.

No CO

At 6:44 a.m. a crew from Fire Station No. 4 responded to the report of a carbon monoxide alarm sounding at a home on the 1000 block of Kingston Lane. Crewmembers arrived and determined that there was no emergency; the alarm had malfunctioned. They cleared the call at 7:15 a.m.

Locked out

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 4 responded to the report of a homeowner locked out with the stove on. Crewmembers arrived at 2:06 p.m., forced entry into the home and cleared the call at 2:16 p.m.

False calls

Firefighters from Fire Station No. 4 responded to a false alarm at 8:54 a.m. on the 800 block of Island Drive.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to nine calls for service on Thursday, Oct. 15.

Friday, Oct. 16

False calls

AFD firefighters responded to two false alarms: at Washington Elementary School at 9:02 a.m.; and on the 900 block of North Loop Road at 12:07 p.m.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 20 calls for service in Alameda and one mutual-aid call in Berkeley on Friday, Oct. 16.

Saturday, Oct. 17

Diesel spill

An AFD crew was dispatched

to investigate the report of a hazardous material spill on the 3100 block of Fir Avenue. When they arrived at 10:57 p.m. crewmembers found diesel fuel spilled on a driveway. They notified dispatch to contact the Coast Guard and public works for additional absorbent. Dispatch also contacted National Response Corporation (NRC) to investigate and make a report. Crewmembers laid down absorbent and put absorbing pads in the drains. While investigating the cause of the spill, crewmembers found a broom saturated with diesel fuel at a home on Santa Cruz Lane. They learned that two people were working on a bus or truck in the area. An NRC representative arrived to make a report. APD also made a report. The AFD crew cleared the call at 12:43 p.m.

False alarms

AFD crew responded to five false alarms; at 7:23 a.m. on the 500 block of Windriver Way; at 9:20 a.m. on the 900 block of Shorepoint Court; at 12:47 p.m. on the 400 block of Pacific Avenue; at 6:36 p.m. on the 400 block of Buena Vista Avenue; at 11:22 p.m. on the 2200 block of San Antonio Avenue. Sixteen firefighters responded to the Buena Vista Avenue alarm, which had been maliciously set. The Shorepoint Court alarm had also been maliciously set.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 12 calls for service on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Sunday, Oct. 18

Just cooking

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 4 responded to the report of a smoke alarm sounding at a home on the 3400 block of Oleander Avenue. When crewmembers arrived at 8:01 p.m. they learned that there was no emergency. The homeowner was cooking and smoke had set off the alarm. They cleared the call at 8:02 p.m.

False alarms

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 1 responded to a false alarm at 7:33 a.m. on the 2200 block of San Antonio Avenue.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 12 calls for service on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Monday, Oct. 19

Downpour

At 3:19 p.m. an AFD crew from Fire Station No. 1 responded to the report of flooding on the 1900 block of Everett Street. Crewmembers arrived, determined that the excess water from the rain was properly flowing into the storm drains and cleared the call at 3:27 p.m.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 14 calls for service on Monday, Oct. 19.

Tuesday, Oct. 20

Wire down

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 1 responded to the report of an overhead wire lying in the street on the 2400 block of Clement Avenue. Crewmembers arrived on scene at 2:58 p.m., noticed the wire was arcing and called for AMP and APD. APD arrived to help with traffic control. Crewmembers stayed on scene until the AMP crew arrived. They cleared the call at 3:15 p.m.

False alarms

AFD crews responded to two false alarms: at 3:14 p.m. on the 2000 block of North Loop Road and at 3:37 p.m. on the 1500 block of Sixth Street. The North Loop Road call was an unfounded smoke scare.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 11 calls for service on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

Wednesday, Oct.21

Wayward blanket

Seven firefighters from Fire Station No. 2 responded to the report of smoke coming from a building on the 500 block of Pacific Avenue. Crewmembers arrived at 9:38 a.m. to learn there was no emergency; workers had left a blanket on top of a heater and the blanket was smoking. Firefighters cleared the call at 9:43 a.m.

Bombing fleas

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 1 was dispatched to investigate the report of a smoke alarm sounding on the 1300 block of Park Street. When they arrived at 10:20 a.m. crewmembers learned there was no emergency; "flea bombs" had set off the smoke alarm. Crewmembers cleared the call at 10:25 a.m.

False alarms

AFD crews responded to two false alarms: at 12:32 p.m. on the 400 block of Buena Vista Avenue and at 11:10 p.m. on the 900 block of Shorepoint Court. The Buena Vista alarm had been maliciously set.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 13 calls for service on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Thursday, Oct. 22

Faulty burner

At 4:05 p.m., an AFD crew from Fire Station No 1 was dispatched to investigate the report of a natural gas leak on the 3000 block of Santa Clara Avenue. When crewmembers arrived they learned that a stovetop burner had been accidentally turned on earlier in the day. Crewmembers used a gas monitor to determine that the home was free of gas. When they investigated, they determined that a burner on the stove was malfunctioning. Crewmembers told the residents about the broken burner and cleared the call at 4:48 p.m.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 11 calls for service on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Friday, Oct. 23

Water alarm broken

An AFD crew from Fire Station No. 2 was dispatched to investigate the report of a water-flow alarm sounding at a warehouse on the 1900 block of Monarch Street. When crewmembers arrived they learned there was no emergency; the alarm had malfunctioned. They advised an employee at the building to have someone repair the alarm and cleared the call at 12:17 p.m.

Marijuana and mischief

At 7:12 p.m. an AFD crew from Fire Station No. 2 responded to the report of an alarm sounding at an apartment complex on the 400 block of Buena Vista Avenue. When they arrived, crewmembers noticed a strong smell of marijuana in the first floor hallway. They had trouble accessing the alarm panel because the alarm-room door was blocked by stored refrigerators and a shopping cart. They found no evidence of fire; a bystander informed crewmembers that the alarm had been maliciously set. They cleared the call at 7:17 p.m.

Just the smoke machine

At 10:15 p.m. an AFD crew from Fire Station No. 1 responded to the report of a smoke alarm sounding at Alameda High School. When crewmembers arrived they learned there was no emergency; a smoke machine had set off the alarm during a dance. They cleared the call at 10:22 p.m.

False calls

AFD crews responded to two false alarms: at 11:24 a.m. on the 2700 block of Monarch Street and at 8 p.m. at the Alameda Theatre.

In their roles as paramedics, AFD firefighters responded to 10 calls for service on Friday, Oct. 23.

Saturday, Oct. 24

Self-cleaner

Twenty firefighters from fire stations No. 2 and 3 responded to the report of a cooking fire on the 300 block of Central Avenue. When crewmembers arrived at 10:05 a.m. they learned there was no emergency; an oven had begun to smoke during its self-cleaning and set off the smoke alarm. The call was cleared at 10:17 p.m.

Pass the ketchup

At 5:12 p.m. an AFD crew from Fire Station No. 3 was dispatched to investigate the report of a fire near the intersection of Singleton Avenue and Main Street. Crewmembers arrived to discover that there was no emergency; someone was having a barbecue on a balcony at a nearby apartment building. They cleared the call at 5:36 p.m.

Smoky goblins

At 7:21 p.m. an AFD crew from Fire Station No. 4 was dispatched to investigate the report of a house fire on the 3400 block of Mecartney Road. Crewmembers arrived to discover that there was no emergency; the Halloween display in front of the home was smoking. They cleared the call at 7:31 p.m.

Real natural gas

At 10:23 p.m. an AFD crew from Fire Station No. 3 responded to the report of the odor of gas on Minturn Street at Clement Avenue. Crewmembers arrived, determined that the smell was naturally occurring sewer gas and cleared the call at 10:29.

False alarms

An AFD crew responded to a false alarm at 4:36 a.m. at the Alameda Animal Shelter.

Sunday, Oct. 25

Tell your landlord

At 1:08 p.m. an AFD crew responded to the report of a water leak at an apartment complex on the 2200 block of Santa Clara Avenue. Crewmembers arrived and helped remove the water from the apartment. They advised the tenant to call the landlord and cleared the call at 1:29 p.m.

False alarms

AFD crews responded to six false alarms: at 3:24 a.m. on the 900 block of Shorepoint Court; at 4:33 p.m. on the 1700 block of Santa Clara Avenue; at 5:50 a.m. at the Alameda Animal Shelter; at 7:22 p.m. on the 1500 block of Oak Street; at 8:55 p.m. on the 1300 block of Broadway; at 10:17 p.m. on the 2100 block of Central Avenue. The Broadway, Shorepoint Court and Central Avenue calls were unfounded smoke calls; the Oak Street alarm had been maliciously set.
