See Works by Bette Himself The Frank Bette Center at 1601 Paru St. is hosting an exhibition of Frank Bette's works in the backroom until Saturday, July 30. The exhibit will feature Bette's paintings and poetry as well as sculptures done in plaster, metal and wood among other mediums in a variety of applications. In the front room, there will be a group show called Rhymes with Orange, which features a large number of pieces of art from several artists all utilizing a central orange theme through different applications. En Plein Air: Alameda and Beyond From Friday, Aug. 5 until Saturday, Oct. 1, the Frank Bette Center for the Arts, located at 1601 Paru St., is hosting an exhibit composed of plein air paintings by artists who have participated in the Frank Bette's Plein Air Paintout during the past five years. An awards ceremony will take place on Aug. 5 from 7 to 9 p.m. The exhibit includes paintings of Alameda houses and landscapes among other locations. Admission and refreshments are free. Ariel Rocks Into Summer The legendary Bay Area rock band Ariel brings its show to Rhythmix Cultural Works in Alameda on Sunday, July 24 at 7 p.m. Spotlighting the words and music of award-winning singer-songwriters JJ Jenkins and George Petersen, Ariel's original music has often been compared to the best of the '60s, '70s and '80s. On George and JJ's songwriting, Bay Area Open Mics said, "They have a wicked sense of humor, well-evidenced in their original material." Jenkins and Petersen's high standard of song crafting features lyrics full of stories that are poignant, often humorous and always thoughtful coupled with intriguing melodies and harmonies, that while distinctively Ariel, can trace their influence back to the iconic artists of rock and blues. Ariel will debut their latest song selection scheduled for release on their upcoming album Noh Big Deal and favorites from their most recent disc Sure Thing, You Bet! along with music from their previous albums. In an all-ages show at Rhythmix Cultural Works, Thursday, July 28 at 8 p.m. the long-awaited reunion of Alameda's jazz greats will take place. With Kathy Moehring on vocals, the band features: Kelly Park on keyboards, Mike Shiplet on drums, Clinton Day on electric bass and Bob Brumbeloe on guitar.
