Charlotte Bowles The West Coast Dance Theater presented its 38th annual musical dance production at the Kofman Auditorium on Friday, June 24 and Saturday, June 25. In the first performance, the West Coast performers "Rocked in Toyland." The curtain opened to gold streamers, bright neon blocks, and two large toy boxes, with drawings from the movie Toy Story. A large group of girls in blue tutus and plastic tiaras stand in formation with white gloves up to their elbows. After performing to a classical ballet the girls are replaced by three tiny pink princesses who fly around the stage. The dances continue, spanning from princesses performing ballet to Toy Story-themed aliens, toy soldiers, and Woodies dancing modern hip-hop. Buzz Lightyear and tap dancing penguins even make appearances. But perhaps the most interesting performance came from the Barbies. An older dancer dressed in heels and legwarmers, along with four soldiers, led a group of young girls and a boy to the lyrics of Barbie World: "you can touch, you can play", "undress me anywhere", and "come on Barbie let's go party" blaring from the speakers. After some awkward laughter the dances go on to more appropriately themed music such as Toy Story's "You Got a Friend in Me." The array of dances and ages made for an interesting set of performances that ended in loud applause from a crowd full of parents and supporters. |
