Rick Murray Monday, Jan. 16 Standing water cleared At 10:52 a.m., crewmembers from Fire Station No. 2 arrived at an apartment complex on the 400 block of Buena Vista Avenue after a fire sprinkler activated. When crewmembers entered the complex, they found that the building's maintenance crew had already shut off the sprinkler. Crewmembers helped remove a significant amount of standing water in the complex. Dumpster fire put out At 12:43 p.m., firefighters from Fire Station No. 4 were dispatched to the 400 block of Packet Landing Road to extinguish an outside Dumpster fire. When they arrived on scene, they used pre-connected hose lines to extinguish the fire. They then emptied the Dumpster. Fence fire put out Firefighters from Fire Station No. 4 were called to a home on Cole Port Landing to extinguish a fence on fire. At 2:02 p.m., firefighters arrived on scene. There, they found the homeowner spraying water on the fire. Firefighters assisted the homeowner. When the fire was completely extinguished, they removed the burned portions of the fence. Alarm heard Crewmembers from Fire Station No. 4 were dispatched to a commercial building on the 2200 block of North Loop Road after an audible alarm activated. When they arrived on scene at 5:34 a.m., crewmembers confirmed the audible alarm. After a thorough investigation of the building, firefighters found no emergency. In their role as paramedics, Alameda firefighters responded to 17 calls for emergency medical services on Monday, Jan. 16. Tuesday, Jan. 17 Cooking sparks alarm At 5:33 p.m., crewmembers from Fire Station No. 1 arrived at a home on the 1600 block of Foley Street to investigate fire alarm sounding. Crewmembers soon learned that the homeowner accidentally set off the alarm with his cooking. In their role as paramedics, Alameda firefighters responded to 16 calls for emergency medical services on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Wednesday, Jan. 18 Furnace smelled funky At 8:06 a.m., firefighters from multiple fire stations arrived at a home on the 400 block of Haight Avenue to investigate the smell of something burning. The homeowner believed that the odor was coming from his furnace. Firefighters shut off the furnace, inspected the furnace and the home, but were unable to locate the source of the smell. They advised the homeowner to have his furnace inspected and cleared the call. Odd substance found Crewmembers from Fire Station No. 1 were dispatched to a sidewalk on the 2800 block of Windsor Drive to investigate a suspicious substance. Crewmembers arrived on scene at 8:50 a.m. They could not recognize the substance, so they isolated the area around the sidewalk and requested that an identification and recovery company come to the scene. The company identified the material and discarded it. Alarm heard Firefighters from Fire Station No. 2 were called to the 2300 block of Monarch Street after an alarm sounded in a commercial building. When they arrived on scene at 11:59 a.m., firefighters confirmed the audible alarm, but could not find any emergency. They reset the alarm system and cleared the call. Alarm activated accidentally At 3:49 p.m., crewmembers from Fire Station No. 2 arrived at a preschool on the 1900 block of Third Street to investigate a general fire alarm. At the scene, the school staff told crewmembers that a student accidentally set off the alarm. In their role as paramedics, Alameda firefighters responded to nine calls for emergency medical services on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Thursday, Jan. 19 There were no calls for firefighters on Thursday, Jan. 19. In their role as paramedics, Alameda firefighters responded to 11 calls for emergency medical services on Thursday, Jan. 19. Friday, Jan. 20 Embers extinguished At 9:28 a.m., crewmembers from Fire Station No. 1 were dispatched to a home on the 2800 block of Fernside Boulevard to investigate a possible chimney fire. When they arrived on scene, crewmembers met with the homeowner, who said that even though he had extinguished a controlled burn in his fireplace, his chimney continued to smoke. Crewmembers determined the fireplace's clean-out box probably had hot embers. They poured water into the clean-out box and the smoke stopped. AMP called on electrical fire Firefighters from Fire Station No. 1 were dispatched to a home on the 1500 block of Gibbons Drive after smoke was seen coming from the home's backyard. When they arrived on scene at 10:04 a.m., firefighters found a shorted-out electrical wire buried in the yard. They called Alameda Municipal Power (AMP) to the scene to turn off the electricity. The scene was turned over to AMP when the agency arrived. Kitchen chaos cleared Crewmembers from multiple fire stations were called to a home on the 1500 block of Pearl Street to investigate a possible kitchen fire. When they arrived on scene at 12:35 a.m., crewmembers met with the homeowner. The homeowner said that while she was cooking, oil in her frying pan caught fire and caused flames to flash up and onto her cabinets. She quickly extinguished the flash fire, but wanted to make sure it was completely out. Crewmembers removed the cabinets and inspected the walls behind them for fire. They also ventilated all residual smoke from the home. Crewmembers could find no other emergency in the home. In their role as paramedics, Alameda firefighters responded to 13 calls for emergency medical services on Friday, Jan. 20. Saturday, Jan. 21 Commercial alarm set off At 3:14 p.m., firefighters from Fire Station No. 1 arrived at a commercial building on the 500 block of Willow Street to investigate a fire alarm activation. Firefighters found no emergencies at the scene. In their role as paramedics, Alameda firefighters responded to 13 calls for emergency medical services on Saturday, Jan. 21. Sunday, Jan. 22 False call At 10:16 a.m., crewmembers from Fire Station No. 1 responded to a fire alarm activation at a home on the 1300 block of Eastshore Drive. After meeting with the homeowner, crewmembers determined that the situation was a false alarm. Another alarm activated accidentally Firefighters from Fire Station No. 4 were called to the 1200 block of South Loop Road after a commercial building's fire alarm activated. When they arrived on scene at 12:20 p.m., staff was there to greet them. According to staff members, one of the residents accidentally activated a hallway pull station. Food left burning Crewmembers from multiple fire stations were dispatched to an apartment complex on the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue to investigate a smoke detector activating. When they arrived on scene at 12:47 p.m., crewmembers met with some of the residents of the building. The residents saw smoke coming from inside a neighbor's apartment. Crewmembers forced their way into the apartment, where they found unattended food burning on a stove, which was also on fire. Crewmembers removed the food and extinguished the stove fire. In their role as paramedics, Alameda firefighters responded to 15 calls for emergency medical services on Sunday, Jan. 22. |
