Olympian, cooking show star skates at Park Street rink
Ekene Ikeme Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano congratulates Lisa Westmoreland for winning the Ice Skate '70s dance contest during last Friday's event on Park Street. A large number of people gathered on Park Street to take part in Disco Ice Night last Friday at Little Ice Rink at Alameda Station on Park Street near Lincoln Avenue. The dozens in attendance braved rainy conditions to skate outdoors. "It was a lot of fun,” said Alameda resident Holden Rupp. "It's a big difference to skate outdoors.” But the main attraction of the night was the presence of 1988 Olympic gold medalist Brian Boitano. Boitano, a native of Sunnyvale, hosted the disco night festivities and posed for pictures with those in attendance. There were two contests during the night: best costume and best ice skate dance. The best costume went to Rupp, who skated wearing bell-bottoms, large sunglasses and an Afro wig. Lisa Westmoreland of Berkeley won the best dance contest as she showed off her 70s-style dance moves to the crowd. Seventies-style disco music such as "I Will Survive,” by Gloria Gaynor and "Disco Inferno,” by The Trammps was played all through the night. The organizers of the event, Alameda's Perforce Software, was thrilled to bring the unique event to the Alameda community. "The turnout has been fantastic,” said Christopher Seiwald, founder of Perforce. "We had the idea a couple of years ago and recently emailed a few people and within three days we kind of put this all together. The Alameda community has really supported this event.” The night was cut short because of the rain, but attendees still had fun. "I had a great time,” said Westmoreland. "I had my picture taken with Brian and got to skate outdoors, which was a lot of fun.” |
