Blaze Wins Monster Bash Classic

The Alameda Girls Softball Association's Alameda Blaze 13-andunder Girls Softball team won the Monster Bash Classic in Fremont Oct. 29 and 30. The Monster Bash is one of largest of the "Fall Ball" tournaments, with 14 teams competing on Saturday, and then a single elimination tournament on Sunday.

The Blaze, comprised mostly of girls who qualify in the 12-andunder age bracket, were playing up in the 13-and under age tournament.

The team won all six of its tournament games.

The Blaze won Sunday's championship game against a top-notch California Crossfire 13-and-under team.

The teams traded leads in the first two innings, but the Blaze scored six runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-3 lead. Everyone in the lineup contributed key hits and tough at-bats, and the game seemed well in hand. But the Crossfire is a good hitting team, and they came back with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game and force extra innings.

Playing international tiebreaker rules — with each inning starting with a runner on second base — the Crossfire scored two runs in the top of the seventh. The Blaze matched that in the bottom of the seventh with two clutch two-out hits. In the top of the eighth, the Crossfire scored one run, but in the bottom of the eighth, the Blaze ended it with a single that scored two runs to secure a 14-13 victory.

The Monster Bash Classic win ended a very successful "Fall Ball" tournament schedule for the Blaze. The team took home championship trophies in two tournaments and finished second in two other tournaments. The team had an overall record of 18-3-1.

The Blaze team members are Victoria Avery, Alexis Esparza, Cassie Lumpkin, Sarah Mahler, Aliza Newman, Margaret Pendo, Bella Sheel, Ruby Siltanen, Maura Willow, Bella Vick, Lily Wilmot and Mikayla Wong.

The head coach is Sharon Perkins, and the assistant coach is Summer Geyer.
