EHS trounces Moreau Catholic in final game, 47-7
Ekene Ikeme The Jets defense had just as much to do with the teams' 7-0 BSAL record as the offense led by quarterback Andrew Ve'e. The Encinal Jets football team finished it stampede of the Bay Shore Athletic League with a resounding 47-7 win over the Moreau Catholic Mariners on homecoming night last Thursday at Stargell Field. The Jets did not waste anytime putting points on the board. On their first possession of the game, Nahim Paschal scored on a 27-yard touchdown run. The Mariners' first possession ended with a turnover-on-downs when they couldn't convert a fourth down from the Encinal 33- yard line. Two plays later, Andrew Ve'e connected with Bo Banks for a 42-yard touchdown pass that put the Jets up 14-0 late in the first quarter. After Moreau Catholic blocked a Bo Banks' punt that gave them great field position, the Mariners drove to the Encinal 15-yard line. Faced with a fourth-and-seven, Moreau Catholic quarterback Nicholas Kinast threw a bullet pass to Chris Baca for a touchdown. After closing the gap 14-7, it looked like the Mariners might make this a competitive game; but that feeling didn't last long as Encinal scored three plays later on a 62-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Ve'e to Jon Trodder. Encinal led at the half 21-7. The second half belonged all to the Jets. The Jets scored on their first possession of the second half after Kaniela Kahuanui scored a touchdown from the one-yard line. Banks scored a 31-yard touchdown run on their next possession. The game was never in doubt after that as the Jets held the Mariners scoreless in the second half. With the win the Jets finished a perfect 7-0 in league play and BSAL Champions and each of their league wins were by at least 30 points. "Winning the division was one of our goals," said Encinal Coach Joe Tenorio. "It always feels good to accomplish our goals. It's why we worked so hard in the summer ." The Jets, (9-1 overall) will begin their CIF North Coast Section Division 3 championship quest against Tamalpais High of Mill Valley tomorrow at Stargell Field. The Jets will be one of 16 teams competing for the Division 3 NCS Championship. "I think the kids are playing as well as we can expect right now," said Tenorio. "I think we're ready for the challenge." If Encinal goes on to win in the first round, they will face the winner of the Miramonte versus Tennyson game. The Encinal JV football team lost to Moreau Catholic JV: 46-0. |
