"I feel bad for those seniors who worked hard... They went through a lot." — Jets Head Coach Joe Tenorio Jets quarterback Andrew Ve'e (right) gets the pass off before being tackled. The Encinal Jets varsity football team's season came to a crashing stop last Saturday in Kentfield with their 41-6 defeat at the hands of the Marin Catholic Wildcats. The Wildcats were determined to avenge last year's NCS Division 3 semifinal loss to the Jets and they did. Marin Catholic dominated the game from start to finish, but the Jets helped the Wildcats' cause with numerous miscues. Encinal was forced to punt after a threeand- out on their first possession, but the punt traveled negative yards which gave Marin Catholic great field position. Marin Catholic running back Akili Terry scored on a nine-yard touchdown run two plays later. After a Marin Catholic turnover gave Encinal good field position, Encinal gave the ball right back on a bad snap that traveled over Encinal quarterback Andrew Ve'e's head and was recovered by Marin Catholic at the Encinal 45-yard line. On the very next play, Marin Catholic quarterback Jared Goff found receiver Ryan Farney for a 45-yard touchdown. Marin Catholic scored another touchdown before the end of the first quarter when Goff hit Chris Tewhill on a quick pass, and he ran 25 yards down the left sideline for the score. At the end of the first quarter Encinal trailed 21-0. The second quarter wasn't any friendlier to the Jets as Marin Catholic kept its foot on the pedal. Goff connected with Farney for two more touchdowns; one for 31 yards, the other for 63 yards. "They are one of the best passing teams I've ever seen," said Encinal head coach Joe Tenorio. "Their quarterback was on point with every throw." The Jets finally showed some semblance of life late in the second quarter when they stopped Marin Catholic on a fourth-down attempt. On the next possession, Ve'e was able to hit D.J. Fa'agata on a 20-yard touchdown pass. Unfortunately for the Jets, it was their only score of the game. Marin Catholic led 34-6 at the half. Encinal linebacker Alex Amiri recovered a Marin Catholic fumble on the first play of the second half. The Jets were able to drive inside the Wildcat two-yard line, but the stout Wildcat defense was able to stuff Ve'e's fourth-down run attempt on the four-yard line. That was the Jets' best possession of the second half. Goff added a touchdown late on a three-yard run, but Marin Catholic primarily used the second half to play keep-away from the Jets offense. The final score was 41-6. "It was a tough loss," said Tenorio. "They came out and kicked our butts, basically. They've got a hell of a team." Goff threw for 303 yards and four touchdowns. Farney had 225 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Marin Catholic's offense was great, but the mistakes kept the Jets from competing. "Early on it just seemed like nothing was working," said Tenorio. "We didn't execute they way we should've." The Wildcat defense was just as good as their offense. They held Encinal to 57 total rushing yards, do-it-all starting running back Jon Trodder was held to 59 total yards and Ve'e threw an interception. The loss means the team has played its last game of the season and the last game ever for the graduating seniors. "I feel bad for those seniors who worked hard," said Tenorio. "They did a hell of a job. They went through a lot." Marin Catholic will face Campolindo for the NCS Division 3 championship this Saturday. |
