Joe Castro Encinal defenders Cecilia Sifuentes, Carrie Simmons and Gail Barna along with goalie Melissa Ma prevent a shot from scoring. The offensive firepower from the Encinal High girls' soccer team was too hot to handle for the Mt. Diablo High team as the Jets cruised to an 11-1 victory Monday at Stargell Field. Just three days after handing then-Bay Shore Athletic League (BSAL) leader Piedmont High their first league loss of the season, the Lady Jets dominated Mt. Diablo of Concord. "This game was going to be more like a practice for us," said Encinal girls' soccer coach Jean DeCru. Emily Rentschuler started the Encinal onslaught when she kicked in an easy goal from five-yards out after receiving a well executed cross from Cecilia Sifuentes. Alex Sifuentes, Cecilia's sister, attempted a goal from 25 yards out, less than a minute later, but it hit the post. The ball was corralled by Lorin Anderberg and kicked in from three yards out to give the Jets a 2-0 lead in the 12th minute of the match. The goal of the match belonged to Alex in the 15th minute of the match when she attempted a shot-ongoal from 30 yards out and it went over the outstretched arms of the Mt. Diablo goalie, hit the top of the post and ricocheted in for the goal. The Jets did have some miscues. A Mt. Diablo midfielder's pass was misjudged by Encinal goalie Melissa Ma and a Red Devil player caught up to the unattended ball and scored from 3 yards out. "I was not happy with that goal," said DeCru. "We have to respect the opponent all the time." Encinal showed respect afterwards by allowing only one shoton- goal for the rest of the match. The Jets closed out the period by scoring three more goals in the period including another goal by Anderberg from 10 yards out that deflected off the goalie's hands for a score. The Jets added five goals in the second half for the 11-1 victory. The Jets have won six straight, have a 8-3-2 overall record and a 6-2-1 BSAL record. They faced BSAL leader Albany High Wednesday and will take on Salesian of Richmond tomorrow at Stargell Field. |
