Winter Sports Roundup

Mid-February marks the end of the winter sports regular season for high schools throughout Alameda.

With soccer and basketball taking center stage in the winter sports season, here's a rundown of the achievements of the student- athletes.

St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) men's basketball team ended another impressive season (22-4 overall, 11-1 league) with a 67-52 victory over St. Mary's of Albany last Friday. The Lady Pilots also proved to be successful going 16-9 overall and 8-5 in the Bay Shore Athletic League (BSAL). Both teams will take part in the NCS playoffs later this month.

The Alameda High men's basketball team had an up-and-down season, owning an 10-14 overall and 2-8 in the Alameda Contra Costa Athletic League (ACCAL). They will end their regular season against Richmond High on Senior Night this Friday. The Lady Hornets (19-6 overall record, 6-2 ACCAL) proved to be one of the best teams in the East Bay. They beat rival Encinal, 42-45 last Saturday, Feb. 11. They will end their season Friday, against Richmond.

The Encinal men (10-16 overall and 4-8 in BSAL) and women's basketball (3-18 overall and 0-10 in the BSAL) teams suffered through tough season this year, but the men's team beat rival Alameda, 54-52, Feb. 11.

Encinal's women's soccer team (9-5-3 overall and 7-3-2 in BSAL) fared much better finishing fifth in the league; one spot behind SJND (6-2-3 in BSAL and 7-8-3 overall) who finished the season on a fourgame winning streak. Both teams will play in the NCS playoffs later this month. The Lady Hornets (13- 6-1 overall record and 9-2-1 ACCAL record) had a great season and beat rival Encinal, 3-2 last Saturday, Feb. 11. However, they will not take part in post-season play.

The Hornets' men's soccer team finished 3-8-3 overall and 2-4-2 in the ACCAL; the Jets finished 4-8 overall and 4-6 in BSAL; and the Pilots finished 4-10-2.
