Appleton Tops in Womens Tourney

Dee Appleton shot a low net 63 to take first place in the Feb. 9 Alameda Women's Golf Club Tournament on the Earl Fry Course at the Chuck Corica Golf Complex. Stephanie Bellato logged the low gross of the day with an 85.

Forty golfers took part in the tournament. Bernice Herzberg shot a net 72 to win among the firstflight golfers — those with handicaps between 10 and 20.5. Norma Marchesin came in second place with a net 73, while Bellato, Sia Scates and Jenny Bae tied for third place with a net 74.

Madeline Salle and Linda Ferrill tied for first place with a net 71 in the second flight bracket — golfers with handicaps between 21 and 25.7. Marty Stitzle and Holly Cromer tied for second place, each shooting a net 74. Barbara Mickle took third with a net 75.

Appleton took first place among the third flighters — golfers with handicaps from 26 to 29.5 — with her net 63. Jane Sullwold earned second place with a net 67. Third place went to Bobbie Hoepner, who shot a net 68.

Bae won the closet-to-the-hole competition on the front nine, shooting 7'2" from the fourth hole. On the back nine, Betty Hatch won the 11th hole competition with her ball coming to rest just 4'3" from the hole.
