Open letter to Council

Dear Mayor Ashcraft and Councilmembers Knox-White, Daysog, Oddie & Vella:
I join Alameda Citizens Taskforce and the Alameda District Attorney Nancy O’Malley, in urging Council to release the recording of the Aug. 16, 2017, meeting with Councilmembers Jim Oddie and Malia Vella concerning the hiring of a new Fire Chief.

We are aware that, due to the pendency of Councilmember Vella’s claim against the city for recovery of her legal fees and damage to her reputation and privacy, the California Public Records Act does allow you to delay the release of the tape until her claim is resolved. However, we are urging you to exercise your discretion and immediately release the tape to the public.

While there may be some risk to the city in releasing the tape now, both Oddie and Vella are eligible to run for re-election in November of 2020 and the public has a right to know their culpability, or lack thereof, well before that election far outweighs that risk.

In fact, since both Oddie and Vella vehemently deny any wrongdoing one would think they would want the tape released.
