Don’t let the kids lose out

Editor:
There are several good reasons not to merge Alameda and Encinal high schools, but let me mention just one: a merger will effectively halve the number of students who can participate in sports, especially at the varsity level. As a parent of children who benefited greatly from school sports, I would hate to see so many deserving Alameda children deprived of these experiences.

Furthermore, Encinal has a nearly new pool and excellent baseball and football fields that would basically go to waste. Alameda High has to use the baseball field at Lincoln Park and Thompson Field for football, as it has no on-site fields.

I understand that money is always an issue, but let’s not be penny wise and pound foolish, saving a few dollars while losing so much in the bargain.
