I was glad to read about the pedestrian safety campaign (“APD Conducts Pedestrian Safety Campaign in Town,” April 3). It’s sad that it was necessary, but it really is.
Just stand at any intersection for a few minutes on Lincoln, Santa Clara or Encinal avenues and you will see many drivers either on the phone or looking down at their phones. And some drivers just aren’t paying attention.
Alameda Police Department Chief Paul Rolleri is quoted as saying he’s concerned about pedestrians being too focused on their devices, and I agree. However I’m much more concerned about drivers being too focused on their devices to drive safely.
The city of Alameda has invested in improvements to make crossing streets safer, yet too many drivers still ignore pedestrians trying to cross the street. Drivers, please stop for pedestrians!

Former City Councilman Frank Matarrese’s recent suggestion that public hearings airing the details about the confusing land and cash swaps between the city, the Housing Authority and the Alameda Unified School District makes good sense and would likely benefit all of us (“Sunshine Needed on Land Swap,” March 20).
I do, however, suggest the noted physicist Stephen Hawking be invited to attend these hearings since he is likely the only person in the world capable of deciphering all of this.

Many thanks to those individuals and groups who contributed to the Midway Shelter for abused women and their children during the month of March. Some of these generous donors contributed several times in March. One donor wished to remain
anonymous.
The shelter would like to thank Dorothy Wismar, Barbara Anderson, Elaine Kofman and Marion Yeaw. Kappi Bowen gave generously as did William and Judy Norton, Ginny Krutilek and Betty Sanderson. Stanton and Susan Schoneberg opened their hearts and pocketbooks to the shelter as did Lillian Molzan, Paula Patillo-Dupree, Sothera Sang, Jerry Sherman and Christina DeSimone.
Three organizations donated to the shelter in March: People Reaching Out, Inc.; Isle City Institute #51 YLI; and the Mentor Graphics Foundation.
We’d like to recognize John A. Johnson, Louise Parker, Suzi Scher and Lois Pryor, as well as Donna Danielson and Camilla Whyte for their genorisity.
Victor and Betty Wong donated to the shelter in March, as did Barbara B. Meyer, Karen A. Butter, Ken Kofman and Martha Lipka. Pam and Willem VandeKamp gave in honor of Ginny Krutilek.
