Good news for the people of Arkansas, Utah or Nevada maybe, but Californians?

Over the last few months, the community has received a number of communications from the Alameda Unified School District (AUDS) office about the Facilities Master Plan and the potential for putting a bond on the ballot this November.

As the electoral campaign for the Alameda County Superintendent of Schools heats up, tough questions and critical analysis are expected. As decisions are made, it is crucial to remember the role of the superintendent as the countywide education leader.

A dramatic jump in measles cases in California has prompted readers to ask what Alameda Unified School District’s (AUSD) vaccination requirements are and how many families are opting out. State law requires children to be vaccinated against a list of diseases before entering school, but parents can obtain waivers if vaccinating their children would violate their personal beliefs.

The St. Joseph men’s golf team notched its tenth win of the year last week against Pinole Valley at the Chuck Corica Golf Course. The Pilots put on an overall team performance with three of its five players shooting in the mid-30s.

Host families are needed in Alameda for 17 more students visiting from Spain this summer. A total of 25 students, ranging in age from 13 to 18, will arrive on Monday, June 30, and depart on Monday, July 28.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a top- ranked university that students dream of attending. Out of the 18,357 students who applied for admission to the 2014 freshman class, the Institute admitted 1,419 students, pegging the admission rate at 7.7 percent.

Alameda students in grades nine through 12 who have written speeches with the theme: “Celebrating the Legacy of Nelson Mandela” will receive cash awards for their efforts Saturday, March 22, noon to 2 p.m. at the Alameda Main Library, 1550 Oak St.

The League of Women Voters of Alameda are sponsoring an evening with Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) Board President Margie Sherratt and Superintendent Kirsten Vital.
