The Alameda Sun shone bright in sunny Arizona where Lawrence Sasaki and friends had fun at spring training in Tempe, Ariz., back when everyone thought the season would proceed on a normal schedule.

The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) chose not to decide on the future of the California high-school spring sports season at its annual spring meeting on March 17. This postponement impacts all California schools under CIF jurisdiction, including all three Alameda high schools. 

Alameda high school baseball and softball teams played several games before the season was put on hiatus due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The California Interscholastic Federation postponed all spring season sporting events on March 12.

High school track season canceled mid-stride to prevent spread of disease

Before the high school winter postseason was canceled, the St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball team played its final game of the season in the NorCal Open Division title game.

Siv Richards won the Alameda Women’s Golf Club net tournament event with a net 62 on the Jack Clark Course on March 12.

The Alameda Devils, a fourth-grade boys youth basketball team, beat the Hoop Rats to win the local Alameda Basketball Championship on March 1. The Devils beat the Hoop Rats, 38-16, in the championship game at the Alameda Boys and Girls Club, 1900 Third St. 

The St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) women’s basketball team used a late surge in the third quarter to break open the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) NorCal Regional Open Division semifinal against Clovis West High.

The Alameda High School (AHS) basketball teams went 1-out-of-2 in North Coast Section (NCS) Div. II tournament championship games Saturday, Feb. 29.

Several Alameda high-school teams were successful in the first week of the North Coast Section (NCS) basketball playoffs.
