The Alameda Theatre & Cineplex will be showing a free simulcast of Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7. The event will be presented live on one of the complex’s movie screens.  

The Encinal Jets basketball team took down Head Royce of Oakland 67-53 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to improve its record to 11-8 overall. The Jets won the non-league contest in a special holiday afternoon game on the road. 

The Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) had its first contest of 2016 last Thursday, Jan. 14, on the Earl Fry Course. 

Members of the Alameda community gathered at Alameda Island Brewing Company Monday, Jan. 11, to attend the 2016 Relay For Life of Alameda Kickoff event.

The Wood Middle School volleyball players used teamwork to support breast cancer awareness. Throughout the month of October the girls donned pink hair bows while the boys sported pink socks and laces. 

The 43rd Annual Elks Hoop Shoots Alameda city finals contest was held Friday, Jan. 8, at the Alameda Point Gym.

Part One

As the new year arrives, the Alameda Sun takes a look back at 2015 to bring out the highlights of local schools’ sports teams. This week the focus is on the first half of the year.

Last weekend visitors to the Little Ice Rink at South Shore Center were treated to a visit from Sharkie, the San Jose Sharks Ice Hockey team’s mascot. The National Hockey League mascot likely offered some tips to the kids as he is an extremely accomplished ice skater.

The Dec. 5 Midway Shelter Run and Walk saw a special dedication to a long-time supporter of the Midway Shelter and special recognition of a new supporter who is rising through the ranks.
