44th Annual Elks Hoop Shoots Finals Saturday


The 44th Annual Elks Hoop Shoot City Finals were held on Friday, Jan. 6, in the Alameda Point Gym. The contest consisted of shooting free throws; each contestant received 25 opportunities to shoot a basketball into the hoop. 

The participants are split into competition groups based on age and gender. Matthew Garcia won the boys’ eight-to nine-year-old division. Dylan Mann came in second place and Toneyon Musambacine was third. Jackson Yep won the boys 10- to 11-year-old division. He bested Nicolas Araujo (second place), Marcelo Quirk (third place) and everyone else in the division. Alan He took first place in the boys’ 12- to 13-year-old division. Griff Loughran finished in second place, while Shamar Cook came in third place.

Gaby Cuellas won the girls’ eight- to nine-year-old division. She bested Vanessa Loac (second place), Emi Kaneshiro (third place) and others in the division. Amber Cox won the girls’ 10- to 11-year-old division. Jamine Whorley earned second place, while Isabelle Lu came in third place. 

The girls’ 12- to 13-year-old division was won be Ava Murphy. Anya Khan came in second place and Yasmina Morales took third place.

The first place City Finals winners from each age division are invited to continue on to represent Alameda in the Bay District Contest on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Serra High School Gymnasium in San Mateo.

The 44th Hoop Shoots was conducted by Alameda Recreation and Park Department (ARPD) and sponsored locally by the Alameda Elks Lodge #1015.
