AHS Hornet Hall of Fame Induction Arrives After Two-Year Wait

The Alameda High School (AHS) Athletic Hall of Fame committee will hold its fourth annual ceremony to induct and honor 10 former AHS athletes. The ceremony will take place at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 11 at the Alameda Elks Lodge.

The 2022 Alameda High School Fourth Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees are: Johnny Vergez, Class of 1925 (baseball); Herman Pete, Class of 1934 (basketball); Dorothy Stolze, Class of 1941 (baseball); Bob DeCelle, Class of 1963 (track-and-field); Ann Ratto, Class of 1983 (track-and-field); Mike Amos, Class of 1969 (football); Trini Sanchez-Blumkin, Class of 1984 (basketball); Patrick Foster, Class of 1993 (swimming); Marta Westernoff, Class of 1993 (soccer); and James Hahn, Class of 1999 (golf).

This was the original class of 2020 inductees. The AHS Hall of Fame committee postponed the 2020 ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then postponed the ceremony again in 2021. This will be the first AHS Hall of Fame induction ceremony since 2019.

Plaques of the AHS Athletic Hall of Fame inductees will be available for public viewing at the Alameda High School gymnasium from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10.

In the fall of 2016, AHS established an athletic Hall of Fame. A committee of eight volunteers has taken on the task of meeting regularly and combing through endless articles, websites and nominations to find the most qualified athletes. The committee decided to induct 10 new members each year and have uncovered spectacular athletes in numerous sports.

The preparation begins each fall, when potential candidates are discussed, and nominations are made to the nomination committee for both individual athletes and teams.

Then the 20 to 30 nominations are presented to the selection committee, which chooses 10 individuals early in the year. Then the national search is on to notify the recipients and family members. All of this culminates in the banquet and induction ceremony.

Tickets to the event are still available. Tickets are $60. To pay online, visit https://tinyurl.com/mvaf28fe.

Alameda Elks Lodge is located at 2255 Santa Clara Ave. Proof of vaccination, masks and temperature checks will be required for entry.
