ARPD Sports Teams Forming Now

The Alameda Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD) will be organizing several youth and adult sport events and leagues during the winter and springs seasons. 

ARPD and the Alameda Point Gym will be organizing the Junior Warriors Spring Break Basketball Camp from Monday, March 28 to Friday, April 1. The program is being offered to boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade. 

The camp is being described as an exciting and innovative program for youth to participate in an organized setting of balanced competition and skill development. It will also be a good way to keep kids busy during spring break.

The program will be staffed by National Academy of Athletics coaches and ARPD staff. Campers will each have the opportunity to create a 45-second video demonstrating their favorite skill or accomplishment from camp emailed directly to parents/guardians. 

Each participant will also receive a Jr. Warriors jersey, headband and certificate of participation.

The camp will cost $150 per person. Each day at the camp is scheduled to begin at Alameda Point Gym 1101 West Red Line Ave. from 9 a.m. to noon. 

The ARPD Adult Basketball program will begin play in February. ARPD is offering three levels of 5-on-5 play: an open competitive league, an open recreational league and an over-40 recreational league. The leagues will be played on Sundays starting Feb. 21 through May 8, except for Easter Sunday March 27. The leagues will consist of a 10-game season plus the playoffs.

Games will be played at Alameda Point Gym from 6 to 10 p.m. The team fee is $650 for residents and $700 for non-residents. Participants must be a minimum of 18 years old. You need at least five players per team. Team applications can be found at http://alamedaca.gov/recreation/basketball. Applications and fees must be submitted by Friday, Feb. 5.

The ARPD is also organizing adult men’s and coed softball leagues beginning in the spring. The season will start Monday, April 11, but applications are due Friday, March 11. All participants must be at least 18 years of age. 

There will be five men’s and four coed leagues during the spring. The leagues will play its games at night Monday through Friday. Games will be played at 6:30, 7:40 and 8:50 p.m. 

Leydecker Park, Arnerich Field at Upper Washington Park and Toby Chavez Field at Lower Washington Park are the three baseball fields designated to accommodate the nine softball leagues. 

For the coed league, the fee is $650 for resident teams and $700 for non-resident teams. The fee is $715 for the men’s resident team and $765 for non-resident teams. A resident team is a team that consists of at least 75 percent Alameda residents. There must be at least nine players per team.
