Bellato Wins First 2016 Charm

Bellato Wins First 2016 Charm

The Alameda Women’s Golf Club (AWGC) had its first contest of 2016 last Thursday, Jan. 14, on the Earl Fry Course.

The ladies were rained out on the previous Thursday, so they held their monthly Charm event on the second Thursday of the month, instead of the normally scheduled first Thursday of the month.

Stephanie Bellato won the January Charm with a net 71. She also had the lowest gross score with an overall 82. Just 12 players competed in the tournament,  but the top five golfers were separated by four strokes.

Debbie Adams came in second place. She finished just one stroke behind Charm winner Bellato with a net 72. Jane Sullwold came in third place with a net 74 for third place in the tournament. Cheryl Saxton and Sonia Kwak tied for fourth place with matching net 75s.

Other golfers that played the first Charm event of 2016 include Diane Hughes, Claire Loud and Wilda Moore.

The weather was nowhere near ideal golf conditions. It was a cold day, with rain expected by the afternoon, but the course was playable with only three holes being “cart path only” due to muddy conditions.

Several members of AWGC decided to tough through the weather and complete the event. However, many of the usual AWGC members decided not to participate.
Eleven current members and one new member competed in the event. Mary Gong was the new member who played in the event.

Luckily for the ladies, AWGC guidelines state 12 competitors are needed to make it a contest. Because there were so few players there was just one flight for the event with a handicap of 11 to 40.

The golfers managed to get in 18 holes before the rain started in the afternoon.
Moore won the only closest-to-the-hole competition on the 15th hole. Her shot traveled within 20’ 8” of the hole. Kwak came in second. Her ball landed three inches farther than

Moore’s ball. Her ball came 20’ 11” from the pin. Saxton finished in third place with her ball landing 30’ 5” from the hole.

Saxton was the low-putts winner with just 32 putts to get her net 75.
