Celebrate Filipino Independence Day Saturday

Celebrate Filipino Independence Day Saturday

Alamedans will celebrate Philippine Independence Day on the steps of City Hall, 2263 Santa Clara Ave., this Saturday, June 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with cultural performances, Filipino food, information tables and speeches.

This celebration recalls June 12, 1898, when Filipino revolutionaries declared independence from Spain after 300 years of colonial rule with the Philippine Declaration of Independence.

The program will feature Polynesian dancers and martial arts performances as well as the Araw Ng Kalayaan Flag Ceremony. Celebrants will include Mayor Trish Hererra Spencer and Philippine Consul General to San Francisco Henry S. Bensurto, Jr., who will deliver an Independence Day message.

This year’s celebration, the fourth for Alameda, has a special significance. It will also mark the first anniversary of Alameda joining with Dumaguete City in the Philippines as a sister city.
