Gasti, Ching Lead Team to Local Golf Club’s Group Event Crown

The team of Denise Gasti, Ann Ching and Mary Gong won the Alameda Women’s Golf Club’s (AWGC) team event with a net 123 last Thursday, Jan. 28, on the Earl Fry Course.

The event was structured in a 4-man best 2 net format. That means all four members of each team play each hole, but only the two best scores of each hole is counted and the other two scores discarded.

Not only did they win, they did so by a wide margin. The team of Jamie Totsubo, Maggie Lindquist, Jenny Bae and Fran Mori came in second place with a net 130.

The next three finishers were separated by four strokes. The team of Lynette Mladinich, Debbie Adams, Bev Blatt and Stephanie Bellato finished third with a net 131. Judy Eng, Cheryl Saxton, Barbara Mickle and Veronica Chang finished three strokes behind them. Their combined net 134 gave them fourth place. The team of Diane Hughes, Jane Sullwold, Claire Loud and Pam Curtis finished in fifth place with a net 135.

Barbara Mickle won the closest-to-the-hole competition on the fourth hole. Her attempt landed 15’ 0” from the pin.

Pam Curtis won the competition on the 15th hole. Curtis’ attempt landed 9’ 3” from the hole. Her distance was almost half as close to the hole as the second-place finisher Gasti. Gasti’s at-tempt stopped 18’ 1” from the pin. Saxton’s shot on the 15th hole rolled within 26’ 6” of the pin.

The participants of the AWGC team event played through a damp and soggy grass terrain. The course was hit with almost five inches of rain during the week.

Just 23 golfers played in the special group event.
