High School Students Help Classmates Pre-register to Vote

St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND) students and League of Women Voters (LWV) recently teamed up to register and pre-register approximately 75 students and teachers to vote in future elections.

SJND seniors (left to right) Abigail Richter, Caelan Teixeira, and Mila Yoseff-Reyes and English teacher Cathy Fitzgerald staffed the sign-up table to encourage voting in support of the democratic practice of selecting local, state, and national elected officials. LWV Alameda also held a similar event at Alameda High School on Sept. 20 and 22.

To pre-register to vote, perspective voters must be at least 16 years old. California youth who pre-register to vote will have their registration become active once they turn 18 years old.

Pre-registration does not change the voting age, which is 18. Instead, it allows eligible Californians ages 16 or 17 to complete the online voter registration form providing sufficient time and opportunity to get ready to vote. To pre-register to vote, visit www.registertovote.ca.gov.

The deadline to register to vote on the Nov. 8 midterm election is Oct. 24.
