High School Track & Field Athletes Compete
Alameda and Encinal high- schools’ track-and-field athletes competed in the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) championship met Thursday, May 2, and Saturday, May 4, at Hayward High.
Women’s events
Alameda High School (AHS) senior Lauren Lum won the women’s overall 1,600- and 3,200-meter races. She won the women’s overall 1,600-meter meet with a time of 5:08.75. It was her best 1,600-meter time in the 2019 season. Lum won the 3,200-meter meet with a time of 11:17.52. It was also her best 3,200-meter time this season.
Encinal High School (EHS) senior Shelby Nelson finished fourth overall in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:19.22. AHS sophomore Olivia Liuson posted a time of 5:21 for fifth place overall. Her teammate Katy Hosokawa, a freshman, posted a time of 5:35.85 for ninth place overall. Thirty-five athletes competed in the race.
Liuson finished fifth overall in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 11:42.33. Nelson was right behind her in sixth place with a time of 11:59.76. Hosokawa finished behind her in seventh place with a time of 12:04.65. Twenty-one athletes competed in the race.
Lum wasn’t the only Hornet to win at the championship event. AHS senior Katherine Gee won the women’s overall 800-meter race with a time of 2:21.64. It was Gee’s personal best time in an 800-meter race. EHS junior Gabby Cassaro finished eighth in the race with a time of 2:28.26. Twenty-eight runners competed in the race.
AHS freshman finished fourth out of 22 athletes in the women’s overall long-jump competition with a jump of 16’ 6.75”.
Men’s events
EHS athlete Marion Allen also won big at the WACC championship meets. The senior won the men’s overall 110-meter hurdles race and the long-jump competition. In the 110-meter hurdles, Allen finished with a time of 15.91. Nineteen athletes competed in the race. In the long-jump competition Allen cleared 22’ 2.5”. Thirty-seven athletes competed in the event.
AHS junior Michael Chun finished 11th overall in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 19.39. AHS senior Kaleb Vance finished eighth in the long-jump by clearing 20’ 7.25”.
Allen also finished second in in the 300-meter hurdles race and the triple-jump competition. Allen finished with a time of 43.85 in the 300-meter competition, one one-hundredth of a second behind winner Aiden Aguirre (43.84), a junior at Bishop O’Dowd of Oakland. Chun finished sixth with a time of 46.50.Seventeen participants competed in the race.
Allen cleared 41’ 6.5” for second place in the triple-jump. AHS junior Kahlim Davis finished fourth by leaping 40’ 11”. Twenty-eight people participated in the event.
A trio of EHS athletes finished in the top six in the men’s overall 100-meter dash. Sophomore Augstine Tautalatasi finished third with a time of 11.57, senior Tyrone Mitchell finished fifth with a time of 11.74 and senior Aloyouis Bruce finished sixth with a time of 11.78.
AHS’ senior Adam Elaidy finished second in the men’s overall 3,200-meter race with a time of 9:57.22. Thirty-six people participated in the event.
Alameda high school athletes will compete at the North Coast Section Area meets this weekend.
