Hornet Golfers Win at Conference Tournament

Lady golfers post 412, take first place

The Alameda High School women’s golf team won the West Alameda County Conference (WACC) golf tournament Monday, Oct. 15, at the Monarch Bay Golf Club in San Leandro.

The team posted a tournament-low 412 to win the league championship. Castro Valley High scored a 440 for second place, while Bishop O’Dowd shot a 471 for third place.

Three out of six Hornets shot in the 70s in the event. Freshman Sidney Heng led the team with a three-over-par 74 last Monday. She was followed by seniors Alexis Esguerra (five-over 76), Laurie Tan (seven-over 78) and Ashley Heng (11-over 82). Junior Alexis Quan posted a 102 for fifth place on the team. Freshman Giselle Morris shot a 113, but her score was discarded because just the top five golfers account for the overall team score.

The effortless league championship continued the Hornets’ in-league domination of the WACC. The team went a perfect 11-0 in WACC play. The Hornets are 13-2 overall on the season. Sidney, Esguerra, Tan and Ashley were all named to the all-league team. This marks the Hornets’ 12th-straight league championship.

The Hornets will now take part in the women’s North Coast Section tournament Oct. 29 at the Tilden Park Golf Course in Berkeley.
