Hornets Softball Team Lose Heartbreaker in Extra Innings

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the 10th inning, Berkeley High School (BHS) senior Czar Fleischman hit a walk-off off Alameda High School (AHS) pitcher Jasmine Whorley to give the Yellowjackets the 2-1 victory, on March 31. The softball league contest was played on the Yellowjackets’ home field.

The game can only be described as a pitcher’s duel. Both pitchers pitched well past the scheduled seven innings. Whorley, a sophomore, was stellar in defeat. She pitched all 9.1 innings for the Hornets. She struck out nine batters and allowed just four hits.

BHS senior pitcher Abigail Kaneko was even more productive on the mound. She pitched a complete-game 10 innings and struck out 11 AHS batters.

The Yellowjackets got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third inning. The Hornets tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. AHS sophomore Ashlie Nakano drove in the Hornets’ lone run in the contest. Nakano had three of the Hornets’ six hits in the game. She went 3-for-6 from the plate.

The AHS softball team record dropped to 5-4 overall. They are currently in third place, out of six teams in the West Alameda County Conference Foothill Division with a 2-2 record. The Yellowjackets (7-2) sit atop the Foothill Division with a 4-0 record.

AHS took on Arroyo High of San Lorenzo on April 7 and will face Encinal High School (EHS) on April 19.
