Hornets Win, 59-55

The Alameda High School (AHS) men’s basketball team defeated Menlo School of Atherton, 59-55, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Classic Monday, Jan. 21, at American Canyon High.

The Hornets maintained the lead for most of the contest, but could not put the Knights away until the final buzzer. The Hornets began to gain a little distance late in the third period when, after a Knight turnover, Hornet junior Dallas Rider pushed it ahead to Bowman Roach for a layup to push AHS’ lead to 42-31 with 3:05 left in the third quarter. But the Knights went on a 6-2 run to close the gap to 44-37 at the end of the third quarter.

After a Rider layup gave the Hornets a 50-41 lead, the Knights went on a 9-2 run, powered by two three-pointers from Menlo sophomore Toby Thornburg, to cut the score to 52-50 with two minutes left in the game. But Hornet senior Jordan Givens responded with four quick points.

A free throw by senior Desmond Ho gave the Hornets a 57-52 lead. The Knights responded with a three-point play by junior Cole Kastner to cut the lead to 57-55 with seven seconds remaining. The Knights’ only chance was to foul and hope AHS would miss a free throw, but junior DeJon Marks calmly sunk both free throws to give the Hornets the four-point lead and ice the game with six seconds remaining.

Rider led the Hornets with 14 points. Marks was second with 13 points. Kastner led the Knights with 26 points. AHS’ record improved to 12-8 overall.
