A few dozen parents, preservationists and school staffers turned out Monday to offer their thoughts on proposed upgrades that could once again put students into Historic Alameda High School and replace dozens of portable classrooms, improve drop-off areas and boost security at schools across the Island.

The St. Joseph men’s golf team notched its tenth win of the year last week against Pinole Valley at the Chuck Corica Golf Course. The Pilots put on an overall team performance with three of its five players shooting in the mid-30s. James Lemos shot a low of 36 (one over par), Thomas Lee shot 38 (three over par), and Octavio Guzman shot 39 (four over par).

“These three players have done a great job in helping the team get to 10-1, along with the help of R.J. Pimentel and Joey DiGiuillio,” said Coach Vic Quintell. 

A dramatic jump in measles cases in California has prompted readers to ask what Alameda Unified School District’s (AUSD) vaccination requirements are and how many families are opting out. State law requires children to be vaccinated against a list of diseases before entering school, but parents can obtain waivers if vaccinating their children would violate their personal beliefs.

The Easter Bunny brought smiles and delight to last Saturday’s Egg Scramble at Crown Beach. The cutest among the “scramblers” were the ankle biters in the “just learning to walk” category, like these children looking for any goodies that the Easter Bunny just might have left behind. The bright sunny weather brought a large crowd of children, their parents and those just wanting to enjoy watching the children “scramble.” 

Host families are needed in Alameda for 17 more students visiting from Spain this summer. A total of 25 students, ranging in age from 13 to 18, will arrive on Monday, June 30, and depart on Monday, July 28.

They are coming through the EMY organization, located in northern Spain. The students will participate in three excursions each week from historical, cultural and entertainment sites including Alcatraz, I Fly, Great America, an Oakland A’s game and more.
