Troop 11 Scouts Plant for Earth Day

Three Alameda Boy Scouts, members of Troop 11, took action and celebrated Earth Day, April 20, by planting two Chinese Pistachio trees in Washington Park, during the City of Alameda’s Earth Day Festival. Matt Nowlen, Alameda Recreation and Park Department’s park maintenance foreperson, instructed and demonstrated to the Scouts how to loosen the tree from the plastic container by stomping on the container as they rolled it across the ground.

He also demonstrated how to loosen the roots at the base of the tree by jabbing the shovel into the roots and soil and preparing the tree to be planted. The Scouts were very excited about being able to participate and help plant the two trees.
